Abstract
People’s livelihoods in the villages of the middle hill of Nepal are based on farming system. The relationship between climate change and seasonal labour migration in the middle hill areas is moderately understudied explore theme, especially from an empirical point of view. This article goes for adding to the writing by examining the connection amongst livelihoods and human mobility in four rural communities situated in the Province 5, Arghakhanchi District, Nepal. This article also aims at contributing to the literature by analysing the relationship between livelihoods and human mobility in the middle hill rural communities in Nepal. The study area is characterized as a traditional rain-fed agriculture is the most important economic activity for the rural people. Thus, the economy of the middle hill of is primarily agrarian. Moreover, this article highlights differences in livelihood and human mobility patterns between households. More than 80% of the people of the middle hill districts still live in rural areas/settings with relatively higher poverty rates. Middle hill people in Nepal depend for their livelihoods on farming and collecting forest products as well as NTFPs. Arghakhanchi has the district where the proportion of inhabitants from low income is relatively higher than the other surrounding districts and the people are marginalised and high rates of poverty, as well as poor health condition and the level of education is relatively low. Due to poverty and dependence on the climate-sensitive livelihoods, the people of the middle hill are highly vulnerable. Consequently, more households are likely to participate in seasonal migration and those already migrating are credible to do so for longer times. In Arghjakhanchi district, during the dry season, many migrate in search of temporary work as labourers particularly in the adjoining states of India. But, there is no rational evidence that they prefer to choice the adjoining places. Currently, such migrants take up low-paying unskilled wage workers, mainly in urban areas in Uttarakhand, Panjab and Bhopal of India, which enable them to make only adequate savings, barely enough to reimburse the obligation their family has caused amid sustenance deficiencies. In the study area, the non-agricultural activities are widespread and the income from non-agricultural activities exceeds agricultural income.
